Supplements on Recovery Days

Protein Supplements

Q & A with Promix Founder & CEO, Albert Matheny

“I am on a pretty intense weight training program and taking whey protein after I lift with casein at night before bed. If I’m trying to gain muscle, do you recommend taking whey and/or casein on non-workout days?”

Cool! Congrats on finding a routine that it working for you. It sounds like you’re well-informed in the gym and on your way to hitting your goals.

I’m going to be very honest, because my mission is educating and helping Promix athletes. While I’m glad you’re using our Grass-fed Whey and Pasture-based Casein, here is the nutritional truth: as an R.D., I don’t think you need to add your whey or casein into your diet on non-workout days. If you are getting in regular meals with solid protein and high nutritional value, you’re right on track to keep your progress.

Protein from food + protein from supplements

In fact, if you take a look at the Promix Protein Calculator, you’ll find

1) a reminder before you even start that most of your protein should be coming from actual food, and

2) while the calculator was built to guide you toward appropriate protein macros for your body, it also advises on how much of that protein should come from supplements.

I’m not here to peddle protein you don’t need. Remember that protein supplements are intended to support an already varied diet. So skip the shakes on days where your muscles don’t need that kind of immediate recovery.

One exception

Grabbing a shake might be your best option when you’re busy. I would only recommend having protein if you don’t have enough time to have a full meal. Or, if you prefer lighter meals at certain times of the day, a smoothie or shake works as a snack. In fact, we outlined how to get the most nutritional bang for your buck when it comes to making smoothies. I highly recommend you give that a read. If you have trouble hitting your protein goals for the day, your whey or casein can give you a boost, but always try to think about food first, especially one days you don’t lift.

Once you have your diet straight, the supplements fall in line and make it easier to know exactly what you need.
