Nutrition Goals

Weight loss

Q & A with Promix Founder & CEO, Albert Matheny

“I am just starting to take a closer look at my diet and think about my nutrition. I am already feeling overwhelmed. What are a couple of achievable goals I can set for myself this week?”

Great question! I’m glad you asked, because this is an issue so many people deal with.

REMAIN CALM

The key is to remember that nutrition (and working out) is NOT all or nothing.

SLOW AND STEADY WINS THE RACE

It is MUCH better to make small improvements consistently than to do too much at once, get overwhelmed, and fall off the wagon! This mentality leads to cycles of yo-yoing that are detrimental to your overall health, not to mention, unnecessarily mentally and emotionally taxing.

Little consistencies will build over time into larger wins that will get you to your goals. If you are looking to lose weight and don’t know what to do or where to start, my first suggestion for all of my clients who I work with as their Registered Dietitian is simply to start by taking a look at their current diet.

FACE YOUR HABITS

Are there some easy substitutions you can make to pull calories down and adjust your macronutrient profile to get the most out of your nutrition? Going lower sugar, lower carb, and lower calorie will put you on the deficit you need in order to lose weight, but also ensure you’re obtaining calories from muscle-building protein, healthy fats, and fiber for more nutrition!

SIMPLE SWAPS

Cutting extra added sugars is easier than you think.

Do you think you could:

  • Reduce the two sugars you normally put in your coffee to one?
  • Eventually ween from that one sugar to zero?
  • Have a single scoop of ice cream instead of two?
  • Sip soda water instead of tonic in your drink?
  • Eat half a bagel instead of a whole bagel?
  • Mix fresh berries into your plain yogurt rather than buying a fruit based yogurt with added sugar?
  • Skip the bread basket before dinner, or simply take a few bites?
  • Choose a green veggie side instead of potatoes?

You get the point. The answer to all of these questions and the one’s I didn’t ask is “yes.” Of course you can. Everything you consume is an active choice. Mindfulness is important when you’ve got goals.

Do you have to make all of these changes at once? Absolutely not! Choose a small handful of things that are important to you and let those foods allow you to feel happy and satisfied. Everything else is on the table for a little healthy alteration. That way, you don’t feel like you’re overhauling everything at once and are more likely to sustain you healthy habits a build more!

Small things like this really add up for a positive impact without changing your whole lifestyle. At the end of the day, healthy living isn’t about being on a diet.

ONE WORD OF CAUTION

DO NOT buy low-fat versions of products (like ice cream and baked goods) or products that are made “low sugar” by adding artificial sweeteners. Overall, you should be looking to reduce your consumption of packaged foods anyway.

Eat traditional versions of your favorite things, but keep them special by having them less often and exercising portion control.

Moderation is key. There’s no way around it.
