Natural Protein Supplements & Nutrition Supplements for Training
Q & A with Promix Founder & CEO, Albert Matheny
“What is the role of supplementation in training? Which supplements do you recommend? Why?”
I can talk about this all day long, but I’ll keep this short and to the point! Natural supplements support the macronutrient needs that the demands of training place upon you, meaning they properly balance you carbs, fats, and proteins. Many supplements offer convenient nutrition solutions that help hit your own personal macronutrient goals while keeping caloric intake lower, providing “better for you” choices that are still enjoyable over high fat & sugar options that hold more calories and less nutrients.
THE NEED FOR PROTEIN
As far as supplements go, protein is by far the most common natural supplement I recommend for two reasons:
1. Most people are looking to add lean muscle and/or lose fat, so an increase in protein is generally needed, especially at the beginning of training to refuel muscles and stay full. Some people struggle with this if they are starting from not getting enough protein, so natural protein supplements, like a quick shake after a workout, or a protein bar, are an easy way to consistently get the added protein you need and have it at the optimal time to maximize the benefit of your workouts and accelerate recovery. This also keeps athletes from feeling famished an hour after their workout, which often leads to making fast/easy choices to satisfy their hunger. 9 times out of 10? Those quick grabs are cheap, low protein, convenience snacks. Looking at you, vending machine.
2. It can be hard to find protein in the form of a whole food that travels well when you’re on-the-go. Fruits (carbohydrates), or nuts (fats) are both easily portable, but convenient choices for protein that don’t have to be refrigerated or require utensils to eat are limited. If it is not grab-and-go, many will skip it, experiencing poor recovery from exercise, or worse: overeating at their next meal. This leads to muscle wasting and fat gain, the exact opposite of what you’re working toward, so that protein is your key to success!
